Winamp 5.04 |
Summary: Best I've used
Details: Having used various window-based media players, winamp's been the one I've stuck with the longest and undoubtedly will be the one I'll always use. I've upgraded to the Pro 5 version and with the utilities and functionality it brings to the table, I can't see myself going back to anything else.
Pros: Huge list of things it can do, very good UI, quality is very good.
Cons: Not the easiest to use if you're not savvy with programs like this.
Period used: 4+ years
Other products used: Too many to list.

Winamp 5.01 |
Summary: I use winamp for less clutter
Details: Though the interface has become noticably more bloated over the last few iterations, Winamp is still customizable enough so that I can get the basic controls, song information, and playlist information without the player hogging up a ton of screen space. With Foxy Tunes its even better because I can minimize this already svelte player and have the most needed controls available at all times since I rarely close my web broweser.
Pros: Streamlined interface on a more than capable player.
Cons: Overall program seems to be getting more bloated in an effort to mimic WMP and other widely used players.
Period used: 6 years
Other products used: Windows Media Player, XMMS (linux), ITunes

Winamp 5.04 |
Summary: Winamp Supreme
Details: MusicMatch is cool if you don't have too many files (it gets pretty slow if you have 5000+ tunes). Musicmatch also uses FhG mp3 encoding, which I don't like as much as the Lame encoder for Winamp. Windows Media player has a clunky interface and encourages overly intrusive Digital Rights Management. I don't like iTunes encouragement of the AAC codec, either.
Pros: Fast, very configurable, lots of control, Lame encoder
Cons: Too complicated for newbies

Summary: Great audio (really kicks MS Media player), but not as pretty
Details: I like the user interface to MS Media Player, but the audio stinks compared to WinAmp; this is a machine specifically built to be part of the hifi, so it's playing through a serious amplifier / speaker setup (Denon / Tannoy). On the TV, the user interface to WinAmp is hard to read, though replacing the skin helped a lot. However, the audio is rich and detailed whereas MS Media Player sounds "tinny"
Pros: Great audio, good support, free
Cons: Not the best UI

Summary: Best freeware there is.
Details: If you have to find better freeware than winamp, then i think you'll have to wait until armageddon happens. Unbloated, yet full of features, easy to use, v.light in processing and memory, v.customisable, all add up to the best audio player there is around. Too bad the good company behind it is AOL, aaah the good times when its tottally freeware without any commercial purpose of the development

Summary: One of the Best mp3 players
Details: I have used many media players and this one is the best for mp3. It can play most any audio files and now it can play video files too. Overall it is a good player. But I would not use it to play videos. The player needs a little more work. They could make it load a little more faster.
