Details: The original Classic Media Player. Comes as part of Real Alternative. An alternative player for not only Real audio, but many others. It is MUCH smaller than RealPlayer and doesn't clog your system with a bunch of junk. It just works. :-)

Summary: Great Player overall!

Details: My favourite frontend is phpmp, but I also use ncmpc and just plain old mpc.

Pros: Multiple interfaces, great quality sound, easy on the cpu, xfade, can start playing on bootup, supports many formats incl vorbis, flac, speex, mp3 and more

Cons: A little complicated to setup.

Period used: The last year or so.

Summary: Best video player available.

Details: This thing can play most literally anything. Has great support for subs, esp. when combined with the free vosub. I use it in conjunction with RealAlternative and Quicktime Alternative to provide me video support for those codecs. DVDs and SVCDs are no problem. MKVs, OGMs with subtitles... no problems again. Supports multiple audio feeds, which works great for videos that have an english and japanese track. Low on ressources. It also offers playlist management and can play audio files. If there's any con, it is that the GUI isn't exactly the most straightforward in the world. But that truly is the only con I can think of.

Pros: Plays virtually everything. No advertising. Efficient.

Cons: GUI not the most straight-forward ever devised.

Period used: Last 3 years.

Summary: MPD is my new baby... it's awesome!

Details: Before I found MPD, I got mad everytime I had to restart X because my music would turn off. I love my music. A lot. Now with MPD that's not a problem. The ability to easily write a GUI in ANY language is a great feature as well. I use MPC (the command line client), but there's GTK clients, as well as web clients. I'm also looking into an IRC bot client.

Pros: Runs as a server, light weight, fast, easy to write a client for it

Cons: Doesn't come with a GUI pre-packed, have to find your own

Summary: remarkable piece of software

Details: don't let the lack of a modern UI throw you off. there isn't much this player can't do. throw in the real alternative and quicktime alternative and it's quite the media powerhouse. personally, i believe it to play DVDs better than PowerDVD. try it an love it.

Summary: good audio;exellent video

Details: The only thing stopping media player classic from a solid 5 is the lack of a equiliser that I find esential as my hearing is going due to indystrial deafness.

Pros: easy to use,good playback

Details: And most codec packs I've seen prefer Media Player Classic. While it's not the best interface, it's really easy to use, and the sheer number of codecs suppoted and developed specifically for it is astounding.

Pros: Great features, works great, fast, open source

Cons: ugly interface, videos embedded in web pages don't have a control bar

Summary: The most compatiable media player

Details: This media player plays all files DivX, Avi, Movs, RealMedia, and many more with most codecs support. Its stick fast and has superb playback qualities I have never found anywhere else.

Pros: Compatability - Plays 99% of files.

Cons: No Visualisations for Music Files

Details: I've used many video/audio programs in the past, and this by far is the best media program out there. This is the first program I use whenever I need to play a video file.

Pros: Very small program, clean and simple UI.

Cons: Has a nice codec finder, but the site it goes to is no longer up.

Details: This player, alone with the K-Lite Codec Pack plays any media format imaginble. It has a nice simple interface and easy to use controls, plus loads quickly. I just love this player over anything out there.

Details: Only 2 Files, one .exe (5 MB) one .dll (2 MB), copy them where you like them, no long installation routines, no ads, no spyware, no bullshit - just a good Audio & Video Player. Easy for newbies, great to configure for pros! Well, as all players you need codecs to play all the stuff around, though it can decode most of the stuff without any further codec download. Skin is based on good old Windows Media Player 6.4 - so even the GUI is clean and simple.

Pros: Small tool that plays them all !

Cons: Codec Finder doesn´t work atm

Summary: No Hassle Player

Details: Plays mp3, wmv, quick time and real media as well as DVD and CD video without all those annoying commercials and privacy issues that Apple, Real, and Microsoft insist on supporting.

Details: Good interface, and easy for use. But it lacks in somethings like the organization of media library, the player is not smart to recognize the artis and albuns like WINAMP. But the media library os WMP is much more good to use than winamp....
